Travel to Imp'40 If you can't come by Imp, come anyway!

To get there by car (e.g. Imp): follow the M53 motorway towards Birkenhead on the Wirral. You will pass the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village shopping centre and then the Vauxhall Motors plant. Exit at Junction 4 and follow the B5151 (first exit off the roundabout, signposted towards Thornton Hough). This is a busy roundabout. The road passes Clatterbridge Hospital with its important oncology unit and then Drayton Motors Volvo sales and petrol station. You will soon come to a small crossroads where you can turn right to Thornton Hough village on the B5136 Thornton Common Road. To get to the camp site turn instead left past the Wirral RFC Club House. Ocean Field is on the left just after a small nature reserve. We will put signs out. By coach/ bus:
Take a National Express coach to Liverpool Coach Station, Norton Street. Alternatively you could take a National Express coach to Birkenhead, Europa Boulevard. This will probably be the same coach so get off in Birkenhead. From London the travel time is around 6 hours (possibly changing in Birmingham) or from Glasgow around 7 hours changing in Manchester. From Birkenhead central railway station (just around the corner) you can take a local bus via Exmouth Street/ Charing Cross to either Clatterbridge Hospital or the Seven Stars, Thornton Hough. By rail:

• From Manchester Piccadilly you can take a train to Liverpool Lime Street (approx. 45 minutes) and then to Bromborough (approx. 25 minutes). You could also take the train from Liverpool to Heswall (approx. 30 minutes).
• From Liverpool Lime Street take a train to Bromborough (approx. 25 minutes). You could also take a train to Heswall (approx. 30 minutes).
• From Chester take a train to Bromborough Rake (approx. 40 minutes).

By air:

• Liverpool John Lennon Airport Onward travel to IMP40 can be as follows:
  • Car Rental: Ask at the airport rental desks - Holiday Autos, Sky Drive or Mersey Hire.
  • Train: You will first need to take a taxi to Liverpool Lime Street station (approx. 7 miles). Alternatively you can take Arriva Bus number 80A from the airport to Garston Station (approx. 10 mintes) and then a train to Lime Street. Trains are every 15 minutes. You could also take the Airport Express coach to Lime Street. Coaches leave every 1/2 hour and the journey takes around 35 minutes. From Lime Street get a train to Bromborough (approx. 25 minutes). You could also take a train to Heswall (approx. 30 minutes). From Bromborough or Heswall you should ask for a taxi to Wirral Rugby Club, Thornton Hough, The Wirral.
  • Taxi: There is a taxi rank immediately outside the airport building, please ask the drivers for prices. From Liverpool airport to Thornton Hough is approximately 25 miles.
• Manchester Airport
  • Car Rental: Ask at the airport rental desks.
  • Train: There is a frequent train service between the Airport and Manchester Piccadilly. Six trains an hour run throughout the day, Monday to Saturday - and there are four on Sundays. From Manchester Piccadilly you can take a train to Liverpool Lime Street (approx. 45 minutes) and then to Bromborough (approx. 25 minutes). You could also take the train from Liverpool to Heswall (approx. 30 minutes). An alternative is to go to Chester (approx. 1 hour) and then to Bromborough Rake (approx. 40 minutes). From Bromborough or Heswall you should ask for a taxi to Wirral Rugby Club, Thornton Hough, The Wirral.

• to Birkenhead or Liverpool:
  The Port of Liverpool Twelve Quays River Terminal or The Port of Liverpool Passenger Ferry Terminal. There are several daily P&O crossings from Dublin to Liverpool and also Super Seacat Fast Ferry crossings via Isle of Man.   There are cheap crossings from Dun Laoghaire, Dublin to Port of Holyhead, Anglesey by either Stenaline or Irish Ferries. However the onward journey will be somewhat more complicated. For more information see Travel Friend guide.
